Thursday, January 21, 2010 : Good NEWS Everyone, We Killed Putricide Shanthrax
I didn't get a screen shot of everyone posed around his corpse, but I'm hoping this action shot really captures the essence of FUN we had as we worked this guy down. This isn't actually the attempt that we killed him on, far too many people were dead, but I'm hoping you find the picture of pope as an angel pleasing.

Thursday, January 7, 2010 : New Content and the Bench Shanthrax
I am so glad I took that last screenshot of the twins, considering that a Blizzard change has made us rethink and relearn our strategy. While we're doing that, we are simultaneously learning new boss fights in Ice Crown Citadel. The first wave of fights didn't seem terribly difficult, we breezed through Saurfang, with only some minor difficulties on Deathwhisper. (She's been nerfed now, so maybe even our Sat Alt-Group can get past her.)

New content tends to bring renewed interest, so we do have a lot more signups than we did in November and December (and recruitment due to low numbers during that period has also somewhat bloated our numbers). For those sitting out, I have a very simple system. If I sit you out for a raid, I put your name in a little notebook and the date. The next time I need to sit someone out, I pick a different name. I also try to not exclude the same person on the same day. For instance, if you sat out on a Wed when we did new content, I will make every effort not to sit you out the following week on new content day.

You may notice that some people never get sit out. This is true. Some people are far too necessary or bring a utility that cannot be replaced. That's just the reality of running a very small core of raiders, we may only have ONE of a certain type. Alternately, some people have made themselves stand out in DPS and I'll rarely drop them from the raid. Remember that always, the final goal is PROGRESSION.

Consider also that my little notebook only tracks those who have sat out recently. I do not track whether you have been in a raid recently due to availability. Sometimes you may have had obligations and weren't raiding for a week or have had sporadic attendance, and think "wow, finally I get a night to raid". Sorry, I don't actually consider that when deciding who to exclude from a raid, I look at the notebook and go "look, player A hasn't been sat since November". Player A might also have not signed up for 2 weeks either, which is irrelevant.

Final note: none of this applies to 10 man raid formation, that's a whole other story.

Friday, December 4, 2009 : Closing In Shanthrax
We managed to get the Twin Val'kyr down two weeks ago. Here's the screenshot to prove it - just ignore that pile of bones there in the doorway, it was totally laying there when we got in.

To all those who have applied recently - be patient as we review applications and take a close look at what kind of classes we need and how many can be absorbed.

FAQ for New (and old) Members of the Hellfire Club

1. What is up with the ranks?

Generally speaking, raiders are highly dependable individuals who are capable of tackling the hardest content. They are the best geared and generally the first chosen for any given raid - raiders must maintain a 70% attendance rate. Members are also capable individuals but usually do not meet the 70% attendance requirement, often used to fill in for raids where we are missing raiders or certain classes. While most of the time, raiders will get priority over members, this is not always the case. We do try to keep our members up to date with gear and experience so that they are *able* to fill in when necessary. Occasionally, raiders may be asked to sit out for a member. Socials are those who usually have no interest in raiding, friends of raiders, or those who have very unpredictable schedules. Socials are not often used in 25 man raids, but can find places in 10 man events.

2. How does DKP work?

We use a straight up cost per item system. Most items are worth 6 dkp or 8 dkp (for tier items). We've had to remain pretty flexible with the system as Blizzard keeps tweaking its own loot acquirement options - badges etc. The ultimate goal of the dkp system is to just fairly distribute loot.

3. Who are the officers for ........ ?

We don't have assigned officers for specific tasks, but generally the following applies

Shanthrax - GM, maintains website, forum, approvals for raid, also does loot and dkp
Horko - Coordinates tanking and uploads the raid parses
Chased - Healing officer, coordinates healers mainly
Durgha - ranged dps, parse expert
Sanquina - Strategist and melee dps
Semira - honorary officer, but has special privileges for organizing bank and raid calendar

Booker, Jingxia, Kizel = people you should listen to in raids, often main assist, tank or other key player.

4. When do we do 10 mans?

10 mans are usually done on Tues, Fri or Saturdays. Various people coordinate and invite for these raids and it can change per week. If possible we will try to split into multiple groups. Because of the nature of 10 mans, not everyone will be able to get into every run, please avoid causing drama to those willing to put the 10 mans together. Also, you are welcome to PUG 10 mans.

5. When Should I Log In?

Sign-ups should be done at least a half an hour in advance of the scheduled raid time. The raid is chosen at around 4:30 server time and if you aren't signed up, there won't be a spot for you. Sometimes, late sign-ups are given a spot but it usually means that someone gets bumped out for the late guy, which is something to be avoided. You should be logged in at least 10 min before raid start time, that's when invites go out. If you're not on, we start looking for replacements. Also, if you know you are going to be late, indicate on your sign-up, we do occasionally hold spots for people when we know they will be here.
